Light of the Fireflies

23 Jan

My grandpa took out his harmonica on New Years Eve.

He gave my family and I a mini concert.
Here is the rough edit^^ of “Hotaru no Hikari”

Too bad I can only upload one HD video per week on Vimeo…

In my previous video “Flashback”, I put a portion of a timelapse I shot. For those of you who are interested in seeing the entire thing, here it is 😀

During my stay in Japan, there was one evening where it was super windy and cloudy, and I thought it would be interesting to shoot a short timelapse to capture the movement of the clouds.

I had initially planned on shooting till the sunrise, but the battery died on me…

Anyways, I hope you enjoy.

[Flashback] Japan

20 Jan

Bits and pieces from my winter break in Japan.

Thanks to my amazing friends, I had an awesome time in Japan.

Decided to leave the clips ungraded to give it the low contrast look that I really like.
The super slomo part is done with Twixtor in AE, and I think it came out really well.

Music by Bon Iver.

Today, there was a Faschingsumzug, which is basically a carnival parade, kinda like mardi gras in the States.

Since I had nothing to do and wanted to try my new Monitor X outdoor, I decided to go check it out.

Monitor X was great in the shades, but as soon as I got out of the shadow, the reflection got extremely annoying. At one point, I couldn’t see what was on the LCD…It might be because I didn’t use the sunshade that came with it. I’ll try it with the sunshade next time.

Amazing video

From Planet5D:

“Tick Tock” is a Canon EOS 5D Mark II (reviews) short that is going viral – posted on Feb 22, it has well over 300k views, and it won Best Picture at the Emory University’s Campus MovieFest 2011. Another really great thing about this for those of us budding filmmakers, is the movie maker Ien Chi included a ton of behind the scenes videos (see below). A successful project, Ien walks us thru the entire filmmaking process including the talent search thru the final production and even the award ceremony where they won first prize.

What would you do if you had only five minutes to live? Trace a young man’s few minutes of trying to fulfill his life’s highest potential.

Never have I put in so much effort into a single short film. This project is the result of hundreds of hours of work from many people. Originally made for Campus MovieFest, this film is definitely the biggest scale and most ambitious project I’ve ever done. Watch in HD and with good/loud sound! Watch my other films!

We just won Best Picture at the Emory finale event. We will be competing internationally at Hollywood in June! I have also been nominated as one of five people in the nation for the Best Director Award for CMF.

Filmed with a 5d mark ii camera with a 24-70mm lens on a steadicam merlin. We did 36 takes to get the right one. Morgan and I went running weeks before to get our cardio into shape for the shoot. Yes, the final film is all in one take. Everything was shot on the Oxford College of Emory campus.

Check this photographer out.

He only uses natural light, only spends a couple of minutes on Lightroom, all natural-ish. It’s great to know that you don’t need to have all those fancy lighting gears to shoot wonder pictures like the ones he takes.

He says in the interview that when he edits, he takes the contrast down and add a teeny bit of blue or purple in the shadows. Very nice feel to the pics.

This is the kind of video you end up making when you are really bored but still want to shoot something in the middle of the night.

Beautiful Combo

Bob Sinclar- Gym Tonic Music Video Remake

7 Feb

I have made a video with some of the people I work with on Sat.

The shooting was 40min, and the editing was 2 hours…

We had a blast dancing, even though it was Wicked cold.

I will like to thank the crew, Isaac, Ryan, Miki, Shingo, Maya, and Mi-Ko.

The lighting was done by Shingo’s car…

I still have some footage I haven’t used so I may make an extended ver.

I may….

If it makes you smile… our job has been fulfilled.

Freeskating is the way to go

6 Feb

Who needs to walk when you can freeskate? Can’t wait to rock my babies when the snow melts! Gotta get new wheels though.
